Laboratory testing involves several complex procedures and is instrumental in calculating the payment issued to Producers who are paid for the quality of their milk as well as for the volume produced. Quality is determined by measuring the milk’s components from the sample. Results of the tests are extrapolated to reflect the quality of a hundred pounds of milk, generally called a hundredweight (CWT).

In the lab, Component Tests are conducted on the samples by a technician using a Foss, Milk-O-Scan, or similar piece of equipment. These tests, performed daily, indicate the percentage of butterfat, protein, lactose, solids non-fat, total solids, and other solids as well as the somatic cell count in the sample. All can be recorded in the MPS.

The cooperative can receive lab test results in one of two ways:
1) Manual Entry--The Lab can send the results and the cooperative will enter them manually in MPS or
2) Customized Lab Import--The cooperative can import the test results from a flat, text file provided by the Lab. The cooperative will use the Lab Import function customized for its individual file format to transfer the data to MPS.
